Hypermobility Syndrome

Hypermobility syndrome is a generalised joint hypermobility commonly seen in children which reduces with age. Some characteristics that may be seen in general hypermobility syndrome is

  • Recurrent ankle sprains
  • Acute or recurrent dislocations or subluxations such as shoulder or knee cap
  • Scoliosis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Back or neck pain
  • Delayed motor development
  • Flat feet
  • Nighttime leg or foot pain
  • Exercise related leg or foot pain

Maria Yee, Physiotherapist

Maria Yee, our in-house physiotherapist has a special interest in treating hypermobility syndromes, especially within the pre- and adolescent age groups. She believes in the holistic management of these conditions as they often encompass more than simply being flexible or being able to do party tricks. Clients will be brought through a comprehensive history taking so that the pieces of the puzzle such as fatigue, dysautonomia, joint pain, dislocations and reduced body awareness can be made sense of and managed. Maria focuses on coaching clients through pacing strategies, teaching pain management strategies, and re-establishing efficient muscle recruitment patterns so that appropriate movement and posture can be restored. Maria also has a classical ballet, chinese dance, and contemporary dance background, and will be able to assist hypermobile dancers refine their technique and recover from injuries.
