Overuse Injuries/Tendinopathy

Our bodies can only tolerate a certain amount of strain or stress, this could be occupation or athlete related. With years or even months of repetitive stress and strain, the tendons can become thickened and are at risk of tearing or ‘rupturing’. This process can happen to any tendon in the body but most commonly can occur in the shoulder, wrist and/or elbow.

Signs that you have an overuse injury or tendinopathy might be:

  • Pain described as a dull ache, especially on movement of the joint (knee, wrist, elbow, or shoulder)
  • Tenderness within the joint
  • Mild swelling
  • Pain worsening with activities (usually the aggravating activity)

A tendinopathy left untreated can be at risk of rupture, in particular with the achilles tendon. It is therefore important pain is not ignored and you have a qualified health professional review your complaint.

Our Physiotherapists and Chiropractors are trained in the orthopaedic assessment of the joints of the body. They will assess your range of motion along with orthopaedic testing to work out a diagnosis for your pain. Sometimes you may also be referred for further imaging by our allied health team, such as an MRI or Xray to rule out any underlying pathology or injury.
